HMKL - Zagger 38 B1
More than 40 years of experience in lure building!!!
The Zagger 38 is the little brother (downsizing) of the Zagger 50 or Zagger 65 from the premium lure manufacturer HMKL, led by Kazuma-Izumi from Japan. This premium manufacturer is not only found in the trout sector. Perch, zander, and other species also love the manufacturer's lures.
Behind every HMKL wobbler lies a long and intensive development phase. Designer Kazuma-Izumi, one of Japan's most well-known and longest-active anglers, puts all his experience and energy into perfecting his artificial lures. As a result, all HMKL wobblers have extremely good running characteristics, which make these lures true catching guarantees.
HMKL also places great importance on realistic color schemes and lure shapes for all its hardbaits. Thus, in the production of the wobblers, pearl effect coatings or so-called "Mylar Blades" built into the inside, i.e., reflective hologram foils, are often used. The full effect is shown when the lures are moved back and forth in the light and, of course, primarily by the catching success in the water, which is why I have included these lures in the online shop.
The HMKL - Zagger 38 B1 was specially developed for use on the bottom of the water, and here the motto is, less is sometimes more. Especially cautious or passive fish are among the prey of the Zagger 38 B1.
A tungsten weight on the diving lip ensures fast sinking (FS - Fast Sinking) of the lure. The use of tungsten for the weight on the diving lip ensures enormously good recognition of the bottom. Tungsten is also significantly smaller than lead and non-toxic for the same weight. This weight also ensures a permanent 45° angle position of the lure. In addition to a very good bite rate, this reduces the risk of snags, as the hooks are lifted off the bottom.
With its length of 38mm and a weight of 2.8g, it fits perfectly into the prey pattern of many predatory fish.
The so-called "Bottom Bumping" has established itself as the retrieve technique for the Zagger 38 B1. Here, you let the lure sink to the bottom (keep the line slightly taut!). Then the lure is lifted slightly with the rod tip or 1-2 cranks are made, and then the lure is allowed to sink back to the bottom, where it stands up. Most bites occur exactly in this phase. Therefore, don't let the pauses be too short.
"Slow movement with pauses is the key to success here," because trout often react to the sinking phase (sinking pellets) more than to the actual movement of the lure.
Alternatively, you can also drag the Zagger 38 B1 very slowly over the bottom. This stirs up a lot of "dust," which also triggers an attraction for trout. Here, a fleeing prey animal, such as small crabs or fish, is imitated. Here too, one should occasionally include smaller pauses.
In short: The Zagger 38 B1 should be fished slowly, close to the bottom, and with a lot of feel. Because the bite often comes exactly when you are doing nothing. Hectic movements or too fast a retrieve are not what the Zagger 38 B1 likes.
No matter where the fish are – the HMKL ZAGGER gets there!

Choosing the Right Equipment
4 simple steps to the right choice!
Perfectly identifying the target fish
Consider what types of fish you want to catch (e.g., trout, bass, pike-perch, sea trout, ...).
Choosing a Fishing Rod and Reel
Choose length and strength appropriate to the target fish and fishing method (e.g. UL rod for spoons (active fishing), bottom rod for stationary fishing (passive fishing)).
Adjust Fishing Line and Lure
Use fine braided lines for UL applications or monofilament lines for all-around use. Make sure to use the right lures for the target fish.
Properly add accessories
Think of a suitable landing net, helpful tools (e.g. knife, fish persuader, hook remover,...), clear bait boxes and a functional tackle box to be optimally prepared.
